Abstract

For some military personnel, the reality of a return to civilian life can be marred with issues of mental health. The incidence and prevalence rates of depression and substance misuse in currently serving personnel and veterans is striking. This article serves to highlight the need for increasing awareness of issues pertaining to mental health in military personnel and veterans, which can be used as predictors of risk in the likelihood of attempted suicide or longer-term mental illness.
