Abstract
Obesity and mental illness are commonly encountered clinical issues that nurse practitioners manage. A bidirectional and complex relationship exists between these 2 clinical concerns, with management of either condition affecting the other. Individuals with obesity and/or mental illness experience disparities in health outcomes. Even among individuals without mental health conditions, pharmacologic management of obesity can have mental health adverse effects. This review discusses current weight loss medications and their mental health implications. Nurse practitioners caring for individuals with obesity and/or mental health conditions can benefit from considering the effect of each medication on physical and mental health outcomes.
