Abstract

A training experience in consultation was evaluated by means o f ratings made by 81 senior nursing students who were assigned to public health nursing offices for one semester as part o f their clinical training. They were served by 9 novice consultants. Analysis o f the intercorrelations o f the ratings suggested that as the students' case loads became more interesting and exciting, consultees felt more was achieved. Analysis of other correlations suggested the qualified conclusion that a direct focus on feelings was related to better ratings for process items and better ratings o f outcome than an indirect focus. The students attributed greater value to the consultation process for themselves than for their patients. Issues in the training process are also discussed.
