Abstract

Educators, psychologists, and other school professionals all have key roles in working with LGBTQ youth at school. To provide the most effective support and services, it is important to understand the experiences and needs of LGBTQ youth; further, it is essential to know what resources and practices are most effective in countering the discrimination and barriers faced by these youth and that promote their resilience. In this chapter, we first consider frameworks for understanding the experiences of LGBTQ youth in the school ecology and for explaining how disparities arise. Second, we focus on bullying and discrimination as major factors contributing to mental health concerns among LGBTQ youth.
