Abstract
This report of the International Study Group of the World Federation for Mental Health is the second of three volumes concerned with transcultural and interdisciplinary approaches to problems of mental health and sickness. The trilogy derives from the discussions of a study group composed of 25 specialists representing 15 fields of professional work drawn from 11 different countries. This volume is concerned with the conceptual background to mental health work. Many of the world problems are related to concomitants imposed by rapid, economic, technological and social change (foremost among them are the population explosion and spectacular changes in communication). Some of the urgent issues discussed are prejudice and racial discrimination; aggressiveness and war; the threat and fear of nuclear destruction; the implication of industrialization; adolescence, leisure time problems and retirement.
