Abstract

This article reviews the current literature on mental control of trauma-related intrusions. First, the characteristics of intrusions and related phenomena, such as appraisals of the trauma and maladaptive thought control strategies are reviewed. Secondly, the relationship of intrusions and distress is explored. This is followed by a discussion of mental control and persistence of trauma-related intrusions. The treatment of unwanted intrusions is also included. Finally, future directions of research are discussed. It is suggested that future research more clearly define intrusions and associated characteristics. In addition it is recommended that treatment outcome studies report their results for specific symptoms, including intrusions, to help in further refining treatments.
