Abstract

Summary 1 The purpose of the study was to examine the possible relationship between mental age and span of perception. 2 The subjects used were 155 male students, both white and colored, ranging in age from nine to sixteen years, at a school for delinquents in a metropolitan area. 3 Mental age was determined b the use of Non-Language Multi-Mental Test, Form “A,” by E. L. Terman, William A. McCall and Irving Forge. Span of perception was determined by a tachistoscope exposure of digit and word slides. 4 Results: (a) There is a positive correlation between mental age and perceptual span for digits (quantitative) of +0.336. (b) There is a positive correlation of +0.372 between mental age and perceptual span for words and phrases (linguistic). (c) A positive correlation of +0.250 was found between chronological age and perceptual span for digits (quantitive). (d) A positive correlation of +0.228 was found between chronological age and perceptual span for words and phrases (linguistic).
