Abstract

Seventy-one first year nursing students were given an MMPI and menstrual history questionnaire in order to explore relationships among menstrual irregularity, premenstrual and menstrual symptoms, and personality. The results indicated that menstrual irregularity is associated with several psychological and physical premenstrual symptoms and with a few menstrual symptoms. From correlational and factor analyses, results were obtained that demonstrated relationships between psychological maladjustment and menstrual irregularity, and between psychological maladjustment and specific premenstrual and menstrual symptoms.
