Abstract

Reality TV shows like ‘Big Brother’, ‘Germany's next Topmodel’ and ‘Farmer Wants a Wife’ are often suspected of violating human dignity. However, whether this damning assessment can be made can only be determined if the extremely controversial concept of human dignity is clarified. In this book, the author conducts a detailed analysis of the discourse on the concept of dignity and proposes differentiating between two fundamental meanings of dignity—‘human dignity’ and the ‘dignity of a person’. She then clarifies what this distinction means for reality TV shows. Dr Carmen Krämer is a philosopher who works as a research assistant and lecturer at the RWTH at Aachen University and has worked as a journalist for various media outlets.
