Abstract

The social dimension of medical practice was already visible in pre-modern medicine, as an ideal image of the political doctor took shape in the early modern period. The essays in this volume shed light on the origins of this image, concepts of “human nature,” and the political measures taken to ensure the quality of medical care. It pays special attention to the strategies employed by physicians who belonged to marginalized social groups.
