Abstract

Abstract The individual expression of the male role in the family may vary somewhat across cultures, but men often occupy similar family roles throughout the life span, despite variation in context. The male role in families is continually reified by men as they model gender norms and adult sexuality, provide resources, offer nurturance and support, and manage and maintain the family unit. Each of these primary male sex roles empower – and often constrain – male behavior within a family unit.
