Abstract

A woman’s average life expectancy at birth in the United Kingdom is currently 81 years; it is increasing and is estimated to reach 85 years by 2031. British women can expect over 30 years of postmenopausal life, and because more women will reach the age of 100, the menopause can now be considered to be a mid-life event. A substantial proportion of women worldwide suffer menopausal symptoms. Few seek help, most suffering in silence.
