Abstract
In order lo assess the current experience in ihe management of patienis wilh acule bacterial meningitis at a universityaffiliated metropolitan children's hospital from Santiago, Chile, the medical records of all 175 patients discharged withthis diagnosis ftom January 1989 throughout july 1990 were retrospectively reviewed. As compared to a previouslyreported experience in Ihe same institution (1970 to 1974), no differences were found regarding incidence rates anddistribution of etiological agents. However morlalily rate decreased from 22,5 to 9,7% (OR = 2,75; p < 0,002] and theidentification rate of causative pathogens improved by 11%.(Keywords: bacterial meningitis.)
