Abstract

Heart tissue damaged as a result of heart attack can be repaired using stem cells derived from bone marrow. Donald Orlic et al. (Nature, 5 April) found that nine days after transplanting the bone marrow cells in mice that had suffered a heart attack, newly-formed heart tissue occupied 68% of the previously dead portion of the tissue. The developing tissue comprised not only proliferating muscle cells but vascular structures as well. MJD
