Abstract

Java has a chronogram in the form of images that can be found in various art and cultural artifacts, both traditional and non-traditional, such as temple reliefs, royal palace buildings, shadow puppets, and as a visual identity of the regency. Chronograms in other parts of the world are usually in the form of text, as well as text with pictures, but Java is different. Chronograms as time writer by Java named sengkalan memet are only in the form of images without any text so that interpretation is needed to determine year numbers and moments of their time. The purpose of this research is to find a method of interpreting sengkalan memet through its visual structure. This research is qualitative with an aesthetic approach and a cultural approach. Data were collected through literature study, observation, interviews and documentation in order to explore and obtain data from previous studies, as well as empirical conditions. This study applies a grounded research model and interaction analysis. The data source is a visual structure of sengkalan memet in various types of art and cultural artifacts in Java. those were taken by purposive sampling based on the type and location of sengkalan memet, which have been interpreted by the Javanese to find an interpretation method. The results of this study can enrich references regarding the interpretation method for traditional art and cultural artifacts, especially sengkalan memet which its meaning has not been revealed.
