Abstract

Unresolved loss, perhaps more than any other human experience, has the extraordinary capacity to jeopardize both individual functioning and intimate relationships. This often is particularly true for males, whose socialization proscribes the appropriate expression of the emotions that are required to move through a grief experience. Further, losses that occur in the egocentric stage of childhood can be especially debilitating. This article will answer several questions. How do emotionally and physically absent fathers affect their sons? What is father hunger? What are the sources of father hunger? What are some rules of thumb for structuring interventions to facilitate the resolution of father loss? What do therapists need to do to work effectively with clients' losses? What might parents and professionals do to help stem the tide of father loss?
