Abstract

In a society that is still thick with a patriarchal culture, gender is often a social construct that influences the views and treatment of individuals, this creates double standards, women and men are often treated differently in various aspects of life. This study uses Norman Fairclough's critical analysis theory to identify existing social irregularities. Re-reading of gender equality is also needed for this research in order to find out whether the desired equality has been achieved or creates new problems using Jacques Derrida's deconstruction theory. The comment 'Try the gender is reversed,' on social media Twitter, is analyzed so as to provide a deeper understanding of how language is used in a wider social context, that actually existing social irregularities are influenced by patriarchal culture which is still enduring in society so that creates a double standard, in this context it is men who are disadvantaged. The expected deconstruction of gender equality has not been achieved because this comment is only an irony over the contradictions that have occurred.
