Abstract

Abstinent and nonabstinent smokers were exposed to a series of cigarette and automobileadvertisements. After a distractor event, a subsequent task tested recognition. Nonabstinentsmokers showed no differences in recognition for the 2 types of stimuli. Abstinent smokers, on theother hand, recognized more cigarette advertisements than automobile advertisements (p < .001).These results, coupled with previous research, indicate that although withdrawal induces generalcognitive deficits, abstinent smokers selectively attend to, and remember, smoking stimuli. Such abias may have ramifications for cessation efforts.
