Abstract

Several generations of undergraduates of the University of Nottingham, as well as other audiences in England and America, enjoyed the experience of hearing Jonathan David Chambers (Professor of Economic and Social History, 1958–64) relating his memories of D. H. Lawrence. Before his death in 1970 Professor Chambers agreed that the text of his lecture should appear in ‘Renaissance and Modern Studies’. It is printed here not only because it enriches our knowledge of Lawrence, but also as a tribute to its esteemed author.
