Abstract

‘FIRST PERSON SINGULAR’ provides a new series that offers an opportunity both to publish new editions and to reprint those currently out of print [John Aubrey, Brief Lives, modern English version, ed. Richard Barber. Pp. iv + 332. Woodbridge, Suffolk: The Boydell Press, 2004. John Evelyn, The Diary of John Evelyn, ed. Guy de la Bédoyère. Pp. 380. Woodbridge, Suffolk: The Boydell Press, 2004. John Bulkeley and the Hon. John Byron (intro. by Alan Gurney), The Loss of The Wager. Pp. xxvi + 240. Woodbridge, Suffolk: The Boydell Press, 2004. Paperbound £14.99 (ISBN 1 84383 096 5)]. Thus, Barber's edition of Aubrey's Brief Lives was first published by the Boydell Press in 1982, while the edition of Evelyn's Diary was first published by the same press in 1995. The Loss of The Wager, on the other hand is based on eighteenth-century editions. It is a tale of shipwreck and mutiny told by two of the survivors, John Bulkeley, the leader of those who rejected the captain's authority, and John Byron, the poet's grandfather, who stayed with the captain. Bulkeley's account was first published in 1743 and is reprinted from that edition. Byron's account was published in 1768, although the 1785 edition is used for the modern version.
