Abstract

No statistical analysis of twin births has ever been carried out in Turkey. Our first attempt in this field consists of the results of the three-year statistics based on the birth logs of Ankara Maternity Hospital. This shows that twin births in our country has a higher rate than expected. 17706 babies were born at Ankara Maternity Hospital in 1952-53-54, of which 17219 were single births, 236 were twin births and 5 were triplet births. The yearly average is 5820 deliveries at Ankara Maternity Hospital, which amounts to a total number of 5902 babies. The statistics demonstrate that the annual average for single births is 5740, as for twin births it is 78-79, and for triplet births it is1-2. The rate of twin births is 1% in 1952, 1,89% in 1953, and 1,09% in 1954. The average rate for the three years is 1,35%, which means 2 twin births out of every 75 births, whereas it is 1 triple births out of every 3492 births.
