Abstract

The kinetic mechanism of the D-H exchange reaction between (trimethylamine)borane (TMAB) and a cation - exchange membrane in the D + form has been studied. The results obtained indicate that the reaction is first order in TMAB and pseudo first order with increasing D 2 SO 4 concentrations in the membrane. The reaction was shown to be followed by the hydrolysis side reactions of TMAB and its deuteratcd product (TMAB-d 3 ). The hydrolysis resulted in the formation of trimethylammonium, which inhibits the D-H exchange reaction
