Abstract

This article aims to describe female circumcision in terms of hadith and medical perspectives, with the consideration that hadith is one of the sources of Islamic law, so it is necessary to study its quality as a basis for behavior for Muslims. As for the medical perspective as a supporting study because one of the criteria for a valid hadith on health will not conflict with the medical. This research uses a descriptive-critical method by criticizing the female circumcision contained in the hadith books. The research results indicate that female circumcision does not have a strong basis in hadith. However, there are still some areas in Indonesia practice it as a hereditary tradition. Likewise, empirical facts and medical analysis related to female circumcision show that this tradition can harm the female reproductive organs. This should also be taken into consideration that underlies a policy or legal decision because religion exists to realize the benefit of humans, include the safety of self and offspring.
