Abstract

We report the hard magnetic properties and crystallization behavior of several R0.4Fe0.6 alloys (R = Pr, Sm, Gd, Tb, Er) prepared by the melt-spinning technique. In particular, we find that the coercivity of each alloy exhibits a maximum as a function of quench rate, which was controlled by varying the surface velocity of the rotating substrate. Pr0.4Fe0.6 develops an intrinsic room-temperature coercivity maximum of 7.5 kOe. The corresponding value for Sm0.4Fe0.6, whose properties change dramatically with cooling rate, is 24 kOe.
