Abstract

The melting of paraffin layers is investigated in terms of the two-dimensional dislocation theory of melting. The theory is strictly applicable to short paraffin chains. For longer chains the melting criterion is modified to include the reduction of melting point due to chain flexibility (kinking). The results are found to be in satisfactory agreement with experiment.
