Abstract

Nd123 superconductors with high Tc can be grown by melt-processing in air using Ba rich Nd422 solid solution powders as precursor without additional high temperature annealing in a reduced oxygen atmosphere. In this study, we tried to fabricate RE-Ba-Cu-O (RE: Sm, Gd) bulk superconductors by the melt process in air without additional high temperature annealing in a reduced oxygen atmosphere by using Ba rich Nd422 solid solution powders with precursor in analogy to the success in the Nd-Ba-Cu-O system. However, we have found that the reaction process is complicated and similar technique cannot directly be applied to the Sm and Gd systems.
