Abstract

A chamber-type, cross-head melt impregnation die was used to manufacture a thermoplastic prepreg. In order to achieve a sufficiently high degree of impregnation, different processing parameters were studied. Optimization of the process resulted in a high quality polypropylene/glass fibre prepreg, suitable for tape winding and injection moulding. A description of the melt impregnation line, determination of the degree of impregnation, and influence of impregnation parameters on the degree of impregnation, is presented.
