Abstract

Bowen's series of silicate-mineral growth from melts can be deduced easily from the effect of the stoichiometry of the initial olivine on the composition of the residual melt, which then has to give rise to other silicates less “wasteful” of oxygen. The same series can also be deduced from qualitative chemical-potential diagrams, themselves easy to construct from appropriate mineral-composition diagrams. Similar diagrams also yield mineral-crystallization sequences from aqueous solutions. Chemical-potential diagrams are a sound and very easy pedagogical tool to connect geochemistry with petrology in all kinds of environments and rocks.
