Abstract

In the past years, there has been a great effort to obtain genomic tools in melon (Cucumis melo L.). Advances in next-generation sequencing technologies have made possible to obtain de novo draft genome sequences for many plant species, including melon and other cucurbits. Since the publication of the cucumber, melon and watermelon genomes, the cucurbit scientific community has a collection of powerful tools that can be used to help understand important biological processes that are unique to these species. At the same time, genome sequences can be used to assist in breeding programs for the development of improved varieties. This chapter describes the collection of genetic and genomic tools that have been developed in melon until the publication of the melon genome, some of which have been centralized at the ICuGI webpage. The main features of the published melon genome, some data about comparative genomic studies among cucurbit species and some possible applications of the melon genome sequence are also discussed.
