Abstract

Melittin, a peptide toxin from bee venom, disrupts the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), according to Joshua Hood and Lee Ratner at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo., and their collaborators. Moreover, when embedded in and then delivered by biodegradable nanoparticles, melittin still can attack HIV but does not damage human cells, including those lining the vagina. They plan to develop melittin-containing nanoparticles into a gel that can be applied to the vagina as a means of blocking HIV transmission to women following intercourse.
