Abstract

Sri Lankan Journal of Infectious Diseases (SLJID) is an open access, peer-reviewed, biannual journal published by the Sri Lankan Society for Microbiology (SSM). The Journal considers articles from all professional disciplines involved in the field of infectious diseases. The SLJID does not charge any article processing or publication fee. The Journal has been in publication since 2011 and is included in the DOAJ since 2018.

Introduction

Melioidosis is caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, a Gram negative bacillus found in soil and water. A 58-year-old male farmer presented in May 2018 to Kapit Hospital, Sarawak with fever and right eye swelling of 1 week duration His past medical history included bacteraemic melioidosis which was diagnosed in 2016. The fever completely settled on day 10 of hospitalization and the right eye swelling progressively reduced His blood glucose control was good while on insulin therapy. Events Admission for fever and right eye swelling for 1 week; treated as right periorbital cellulitis Persistent fever and suspected melioidosis CT orbit showed right periorbital cellulitis Blood culture grew B. pseudomallei Appearance of right eyelid abscess. Resolution of fever and reducing right eye swelling Completed IV ceftazidime for 14 days
