Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter presents a screening investigation of melatonin in human serum. In a study described in the chapter, a circadian rhythm of the melatonin serum concentration (MSC) was found in all healthy test persons and in twins. In healthy test persons, a single dose of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (LHRH, GnRH) causes a significant decrease of the MSC. The normal circadian rhythmus of melatonin secretion of two groups was not influenced by repeating the test. All the tested drugs did not influence in all subjects the normal circadian rhythm of the MSC. The test persons did not take medicaments or contraceptives during the investigation period. In healthy test persons and in patients. psoralen causes a significant increase of MSC. The stimulating effect of this drug is independent from the melatonin concentration or from the kind of melatonin rhythm.
