Abstract

A 60-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of daily loose stools without abdominal pain. Her physician had prescribed bofutsushosan, an herbal medicine, for constipation, which she consumed for approximately 15 years. Colonoscopy revealed dark-brown mucosa extending throughout the colon, consistent with melanosis coli (MC). Endoscopy revealed additional faint bronze-like colored areas extending from the cecum to the descending colon (Figure A, arrow). Biopsy specimens also showed lipofuscin-containing macrophages infiltrating the lamina propria, which are characteristic of MC (Figure B; Figure C, arrowheads).
