Abstract

The frequency of melanism in Adalia bipunctata L. was studied in 13 localities in western Norway. The frequency ranged from nil to 83% melanics and showed a weak, but statistically significant, positive correlation with mean annual temnerature, rainfall, and number of days with rain and a negative correlation with number od clear days. By far the strongest positive correlation was obtained when the frequency of melanism was plotted against an Index of Oceanity. Data from 5 localities did not indicate any association between melanism and level of atmospheric pollution.
