Abstract

The paper deals with the connection between melancholy and the city, which contains multiple meanings. Personal feeling of melancholy and nihilism is present in Crnjanski’s poem “Lament nad Beogradomˮ along with feelings of belongingness, tran- quility and consolation. The city represents the link between different, antinomic states of Crnjanski’s lyrical subject. The aim of the paper is to show how antinomic relations are reflected in the experience of the city and the position of the self in relation to the feeling of being foreign, other, and native, belonging. The analysis is focused on the lyrical subject’s perspective, which makes the term city more complex, revealing, in this way, the complex- ity of melancholy.
