Introduction

Dr Mary Ellen Avery, affectionately known as “Mel,” was a woman of courage, with a sense of humor and deep humanity. At Children’s Hospital (CHMC), she hosted Mildred Stahlman, who was the first to ventilate a baby. Starting my laboratory at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), seeking to learn methods of studying lung development, I collaborated with John Torday, whom Mel had brought from McGill to Harvard.
