Do sada ništa nije pronađeno što bi navelo na to da je mehanizam prevremenog porođaja i njegova patogeneza različita od normalnog mehanizma porođaja, osim različite zrelosti fetusa. Oksi-tocin verovatno igra ulogu u potpori porođaja jer stimuliše decidualne ćelije uterusa na sintezu prostaglandina F2α (PGF2α).
