Abstract

The ocular findings in 19 patients with megaloblastic anæmia are reported. Three reversible abnormalities were found, alone or in combination; haemorrhagic retinopathy, impairment of visual acuity, and disturbance of colour-vision. These changes occurred in folate and vitamin-B 12 deficiencies; their presence was not related to smoking habits and they were found in men and women. The series included a case of optic neuritis of pernicious anaemia in an elderly woman who was a lifelong non-smoker. The other patients did not have the features of optic neuritis; the neurological lesion responsible for the disturbances of vision in these patients does not seem to be identical with that found in tobacco amblyopia.
