Abstract

In the last fifteen years, on behalf of the cooperation with Barcelona and the adoption of strategic planning model, the urban policy of Rio de Janeiro has been oriented towards the promotion of sports mega-events. Its recent (and future) history with mega-events includes failed bids for the 2004 and 2012 Olympiads, the hosting of the 2007 Pan-American games, the 2011 Military Games, the final match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. This policy embraces not only large amounts of public funds but also the production of political coalitions involving the three government levels (central, states and local administrations). This paper analizes the process of the implementation of what has been named as the “Olympic city” through its political and symbolic economy.
