Abstract
D the strike, teachers were front page news. Photographers from the local newspaper and TV crews from area stations were on hand daily to record pickets carrying signs in front of the schools. A fight between two gangs at the local high school was the biggest story in the evening paper. The next day, angry parents demanding that something be done about student violence were given prominent press coverage. A critic of the schools said on a local TV program that public education was a farce and a shambles. His remarks were the lead story on the nightly news. On the occasions mentioned above, school issues were given plenty of press coverage. These stories were considered newsworthy by the news media-much to the discomfort of teachers, administrators, and school board members.
