Abstract

In 2016, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) made changes to the way in which nurses are registered. All nurses working in the UK need to ensure that they are appropriately trained in line with these changes. NMC revalidation is a way of assessing continuing professional development (CPD), and it requires that nurses demonstrate the ways in which they are keeping their knowledge and skills up-to-date. These evolving CPD requirements raise a number of issues related to nurse education. Two purpose-designed audits were created to assess these issues in two specialist colorectal wards. The results showed that many nurses were unable to prove their level of training was adequate to revalidate their nursing registration. Any deficiencies in post-registration nursing education need to be identified and addressed to ensure that nurses are able to fulfil professional requirements and function effectively in their roles.
