Abstract

Meet the matrons’ clinic is an innovative service developed by the community and intrapartum matrons of Northampton General Hospital. The matrons act as advocates for women who wish to birth outside hospital guidelines, by putting individualised plans in place. The service also gives women a safe space to discuss their birth experience and the care they received, with feedback given to the clinicians involved. When women have had a difficult birth the matrons listen, apologise and validate the experience. The clinic aims to enable parents to feel positive, reducing anxieties, increasing confidence, and ultimately reducing mental health issues in the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period.
