Abstract

The 200th anniversary of Edward Jenner's pioneering vaccination of James Phipps on May 14th, 1796, provided an auspicious date on which to launch the 1st European Congress of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. Described by the organising committee as an opportunity for Europe to stage a conference to rival the Interscience Congress on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, held annually in the USA, it brought together over 2,000 scientists from around the world for 3 days of discussion on infectious diseases, ranging from antibiotic-resistant Gram-positive cocci to gastric ulcers and Creutzfeld Jacob's Disease.
