There's nothing new about the idea of harm reduction: helping people who use drugs avoid overdose by telling them how to test for illicit fentanyl, helping them avoid HIV by encouraging them to use clean needles and syringes, and so on. But in the alcohol treatment world, for decades the mantra has been abstinence, abstinence, abstinence.
