Abstract

3 patients with primary hypogonadism and elevated FSH excretion were treated with intramuscular injections of 100 mg of 6-medroxyprogesterone acetate to demonstrate its inhibiting effect on endogenous gonads - tropin secretion. Gonadotropin levels were supressed without changing urinary steroid levels. There was no evidence of estrogenic or androgenic effects in these patients. 5 girls from 4-10 years and 2 boys from 11-12 with sexual precocity were treated with the drug. In the boys no further acceleration of skeletal maturation was noted during the period of observation. In the girls cessation of gonadal function induced castrate changes in the vaginal smears the disappearance of menstrual bleeding and the suppression of mammary hypertrophy.
