Abstract

Therapeutic exercise, especially training of strength and endurance gains increasing importance in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physical exertion implies the risk of cardiovascular complications which is as little as 1 fatal incident in about 880000 hours of exercise in the general population. The risk increases with increasing age, increased intensity of exercise and with the presence of cardiac diseases. The age of 40 is identified as a cutpoint for the performance of an exercise test preceding regular physical activity. Precautions and detailed exercise prescriptions for different cardiovascular diseases are outlined. This review aims at summarizing the current state of the art and may help to enable the physician to prescribe a safe and effective exercise program for various categories of patients.
