Abstract

The Medivance Arctic Sun Temperature Management System is an effective method to lower temperature (fever control and induction of therapeutic hypothermia) and appears to achieve its target temperature faster than conventional cooling blankets. With the expanding knowledge of hypothermia and its therapeutic applications, the cooling technologies with clinical efficiency and effectiveness in improving outcome, rapidity and stability of cooling, easy and rapid deployability, user-friendly bedside interface, cost-effectiveness, and least adverse effects will become the preferred instruments. Presently, the choice of cooling techniques appears to be divided between internal and external cooling. Without comparison studies between these forms of cooling, surface cooling or external techniques have the shared advantage from the two successful trials in cardiac arrest. Ongoing, randomized, controlled studies comparing the Medivance Arctic Sun Temperature Management System with conventional cooling will provide more useful information to help determine the safest and most effective method to implement this form of therapy in our critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients.
