Abstract

Introduction: The endocannabinoid system has pleiotropic functions in the body and it is implicated in the development of obesity and its comorbidities mediating the relationship between the gut microbiota and host metabolism. It consists of endocannabinoids (ECs), N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) and their receptors and enzymes involved in their synthesis and hydrolysis. Several microbiome-targeted studies show that Mediterranean diet (MD) consumption elicits anti-inflammatory effect and boosts fibre-degrading species in the gut.
