Abstract

“Meditation 38” is a lyric essay in 38 numbered sections that explores the multi-valence of butterflies in the English language (from “social butterfly” to “butterflies in the stomach” to the “butterfly” swimstroke and “butterfly” exercise in ballet). The word is examined in light of the speaker’s own coming-of-age as female-bodied as well as her sexual awakening as lesbian. Interspersed between intimate remembered scenes and reflections is the imported scientific text of “A Note on the Apparent Lowering of Moral Standards in the Lepidoptera” by W.J. Tennent.
