Abstract

Abstract Although an often neglected aspect of the western political tradition, medieval political theory contains a rich variety of viewpoints. The student of modern politics may be surprised to find medieval authors addressing such salient topics as the scope of and limitations on governmental power, the proper relationship between religious and political authority, and the benefits of popular participation in the policy‐making process. That is not to say that the medieval worldview is akin to our own. Medieval political thinkers had a fundamentally different conception of history, a different view on the purpose of political life, and a different understanding of the nature of the universe and their place within it. In this way, medieval political theory can provide a useful contrast to modern thought.
